The pavilion was awarded the London Design Biennale Theme Medal.
Great news for all you culture vultures out there. Abu Dhabi has emerged victorious at the London Design Biennale 2023. You read that right. The pavilion was named one of the three winners at the prestigious event and received a medal for the most inspiring interpretation of the theme of global collaboration. Now that’s what we call leaving a lasting impression.
The Abu Dhabi Pavilion at the London Design Biennale 2023 took visitors on a captivating journey through the world of wool, known as “soof” and the spindle called “maghzal or ghazal.” Titled Formation of Soof, the pavilion paid homage to the intricate craftsmanship of Al-Sadu, which is now recognised as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
The success of the Abu Dhabi Pavilion was acknowledged with the prestigious London Design Biennale Theme Medal, which was received by Salama Al Shamsi and Azza Alsharif – who played pivotal roles in designing and executing the project. Their presence in London during the announcement added to the celebration of this remarkable achievement. Look at these trailblazing women earning global wins.
Out of over 40 remarkable pavilions from around the world, the Abu Dhabi Pavilion’s participation stood out as the most inspiring interpretation of the theme. Represented by the House of Artisans, the pavilion effectively highlighted the traditional Emirati craft of Sadu, generating awareness about the importance of preserving this rich cultural heritage for future generations.
Abu Dhabi’s victory at the London Design Biennale highlights the city’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage and promoting collaboration on an international stage.
