The dramatic designs are on display from 3 to 14 March.
Dubai’s Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is famous for its Arabic opulence, and it’s now adding some Parisian chic to the hotel. The iconic landmark is hosting Daniel Buren’s art exhibition, L’Horizon, Infiniment, travaux in situ et situés. Running from 3 to 14 March, here’s what to expect from the new art show.
The exhibition takes place in Burj Al Arab Jumeirah’s Galleria Continua. The show is fittingly titled L’Horizon, Infiniment, travaux in situ et situés, which translates to the infinite horizon, in situ and situated. When entering the hotel, visitors will be greeted by two dramatic pieces: Croix and Prismes et Miroirs. Both works were created in 2019 and are coming to Burj Al Arab Jumeirah for the first time.
Croix was first unveiled at the Museum of Italian Art in Lima, Peru. The work consists of prisms on mirrors that form a large reflective surface. The surfaces of the prisms are painted black for the upper part and orange or green for the lower part. He explains: “I don’t show stripes, stripes allow me to show things.” So, the reflection creates an illusion, which mirrors the artist’s signature style and statement: there is never a single point of view.
Daniel hails from Paris, France. In the 1960s, he developed his artistic style, which plays with the relationship between content and form. Famous for his minimalist pieces, he often contrasts colours and stripes for architectural spaces. He certainly knows how to paint the town, as he shared his stripes on the Paris Metro and on the back of bus benches in LA – all without permission.
Today, Daniel has gone from enfant terrible to establishment, as he has represented France at the Venice Biennale and won the Golden Lion for best pavilion. Plus, he received the Imperial Præmium for painting, awarded by the Emperor of Japan (aka an award that is considered the Nobel Prize for the Visual Arts).
Paint the town.
