Moon Slice: A homegrown pizzeria that’s out of this world

Moon Slice lands in Dubai’s hip Al Wasl neighbourhood.

Jumeirah’s Dar Al Wasl development is fast becoming a hub for homegrown food and beverage concepts. The brainchild of Emirati restaurateur Mahmood AlKhamis, Moon Slice is the latest arrival to the community, looking to fill a gap in the market for quality-driven yet approachable pizza.

Mahmood has brought on board long-time friend and fellow Dar Al Wasl tenant Reif Othman to consult on the menu and help carry out his vision. Though Reif, one of Dubai’s most renowned chefs, is known for his mastery of modern Asian flavours, Italian cuisine is actually where he made his start in the culinary world. The result is a fun and experimental menu that is skillfully curated.

The Moon Slice menu features a selection of light antipasti and playful desserts but the main focus is the pizza with its elevated versions of commonplace toppings. FACT can vouch for the Diavola, laden with Wagyu carpaccio, spicy meatballs, and olive aioli. Other appealing options include Frutti di Mare with its topping of shrimp and octopus carpaccio and the MS; a truffle lovers dream adorned with truffle paste, truffle foam and grated truffle.

Though the pizza style is close to what most would recognise as Neopolitan, at Moon Slice, there is a key differentiator. Instead of just water, milk has been added to the dough, which is then left to ferment for 48 hours before being shaped, topped and fired in the custom Italian oven at 380∞C. The result is a base that has a depth of flavour and is thin yet robust enough to stand up to the generous toppings.

The focused menu will be supplemented by weekend specials, allowing regulars to try something new every time they visit.

The intimate restaurant designed by interior architect Carolina Rey De Castro was inspired by nostalgia and the founder’s childhood passion for pizza. The pizza oven is front and centre of the space, allowing guests to peek into the process of creation. Key elements include tables, inspired by traditional open front school desks, hand-written paper menus on the walls, vintage ceiling lamps and leather-bound books

Moon Slice is located in Dar Al Wasl Mall, Al Wasl Road, Al Safa, Dubai and is open daily from 12pm to 11pm.
