Did someone say five-course dessert tasting menu?
When it comes to the definition of a Dubai hidden gem, you need look no further than BRIX. At this tiny, 10-seater spot in Jumeirah Fishing Harbour, desserts have been turned into a science experiment – and an art form. Even better: the open-plan kitchen allows diners to watch the talented young chefs slowly assemble the impeccably plated desserts, element by element.
BRIX comes to us from the team behind homegrown Asian restaurant 3Fils and sits right next door. Serving an exclusively sweet menu of modern desserts, handcrafted chocolates and truffles, homemade ice creams and the tasting menu that changes seasonally.
It’s the BRIX Tasting Experience here that we can’t recommend enough. Available as three or five courses, it’s sensory overload, but in a good way. On the menu are simple names for incredibly complex desserts but it’s best to let the team of talented chefs take control and surprise you with dish after dish of sweet delight, some of which contain unique flavour profiles and obscure textures.
We don’t think there’s anywhere else in the country that offers a dessert tasting menu and the niche idea is undoubtedly one to be applauded. Seated at marble-topped counters, the experience feels at times more like a cookery class, with one-to-one interaction with the team, were led through the intricate construction of each dish, piece by piece.
We don’t want to spoil too much of the mystery revolving the BRIX experience but dishes such as ‘The Smell’ are bound to impress. Combining guava, coconut and coffee, we are handed a ‘smelling device’ that secretes a scent of coffee at the push of a button, and we’re encouraged to use this sparingly between mouthfuls.
The ‘Fat’ is the third dish on the tasting and probably the most’ out there’ choice, combing fresh mascarpone with olives and wakame. The combinations don’t sound like a trio of ingredients with which to construct a dessert. Still, the subtle interplays between the components culminate in what is without a doubt, our favourite dessert of the evening.
A combination of apple, gunpowder, celery and peas is another showstopper, where the ingredient choices combine into something altogether remarkable, the ‘Chlorophyll’ is a dessert we’d be unlikely to order if we’d seen it on a menu. Still, we are glad to have tried it, and it’s inclusion such as this that make the BRIX dessert tasting experience such a triumph.
The BRIX tasting menu is available as three courses for AED 145 or five-courses, paired with curated drinks for AED 240. The bespoke experience is available every Tuesday and Wednesday at 5pm and 7pm and takes roughly two hours. 48 Hour pre-booking is required.
