The Exchange is the first Netflix production from Kuwait.
The highly-awaited trailer for the Arabic original Netflix series was unveiled earlier this week, and it looks very promising.
Set in Kuwait in 1987 and inspired by actual events, The Exchange tells the story of two Kuwaiti women who are determined to break barriers and make a name for themselves in a male-dominated industry. The series follows their journey as they navigate the high stakes and bold bets of the Kuwait Stock Exchange in their quest to become “Wonders of The Exchange” whilst disrupting its corrupt boys club along the way.
Conceived and written by celebrity TV presenter, actress, and activist Nadia Ahmad, with Anne and Adam Sobel. The Exchange is directed by Egyptian director Karim Elshenawy and Kuwaiti filmmaker Jasem Al-Muhanna.
“I grew up in Kuwait, surrounded by empowered women who were pioneering industries, especially in finance,” said creator Nadia Ahmad. “They demanded to be heard and succeeded, breaking into the workforce and blazing new tracks for future generations. ‘The Exchange’ is my love letter to them, bringing an amalgamation of them to life in Farida and Munira in a new and exciting way.”
Anne and Adam Sobel said, “The Exchange is a labour of love, the result of years of collaboration and hard work as we researched the 80s to build the visceral world in an accurate way. From interviews with historians and people who lived through these experiences to polishing the plotlines, The Exchange was a creative rollercoaster and we are so excited to see it launch on Netflix.”
The cast includes Rawan Mahdi (The Cage), Mona Hussain (Mohammed Ali Road), Hussain Al-Mahdi, Mohamed Mansour, Faisal Al-Amiri, Jasem Al-Nabhan, Maryam Salih, Asmahan Tawfiq, and Abdullah Bahman.
The Exchange is expected to consist of eight to ten episodes, each running for approximately 45 minutes. The show will be released on Netflix in 190 countries on Wednesday, 8 February.
