The expansion plan includes a new passenger terminal, five parallel runways and 400 aeroplane gates.
Travel to and from — or even through — Dubai is about to change. The city will spearhead all its travel operations from the upcoming expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport.
This announcement was made by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The Ruler of Dubai confirmed that within the next decade, a new airport passenger terminal will be fully functional and be able to withstand the influx of travellers that have picked up since the pandemic.
“We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn,” he said. “Dubai will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub, and its new global centre.”
The new expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport is estimated to cost over AED 138 billion (nearly $35 billion). It is located in Dubai South and boasts a design inspired by traditional Bedouin tents. The plan includes having five parallel runways, 400 aeroplane gates, and up to 260 million passengers per year, a massive upgrade from the current infrastructure. Emirates, the UAE national carrier that currently operates from Terminal 3 at the Dubai International Airport, will also be moving to this new location.
The surroundings of Al Maktoum International Airport will be developed as an airport city, capable of accommodating up to one million residents. Leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors will also get a chance to further solidify their presence and operations within the region as part of this development.
The relocation of Dubai International Airport to Al Maktoum International Airport marks yet another major transformation in the city’s evolution. And as this vision takes flight, travellers can expect a whole new level of comfort — and luxury — during their travels.
