The record-breaking building will elevate the country’s entertainment scene to new heights.
The UAE loves a megaproject. The country is home to the world’s tallest buildings and artificial islands, and there are several exciting megaprojects in the works. Now, the state-of-the-art entertainment venue, Sphere Abu Dhabi is looking to bring a wow-worthy experience to the capital. First created in Las Vegas, the sphere is an LED-wrapped hall, which hosts live entertainment.
Backed by Sphere Entertainment Co and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the capital will welcome the world’s second Sphere venue. If you’ve heard of the first one in Las Vegas, then you know you’re in for a magnanimous venue that’s set to elevate Abu Dhabi’s entertainment scene.
InSphere in Las Vegas is a record-breaking building, as it boasts the world’s largest LED screen and is the largest spherical building in the world. Designed by Populous, the structure stands at 112 metres high and 157 metres wide. The exterior includes a 16K resolution wraparound LED screen and is the largest resolution of its kind in the world. Plus, the venue can hold up to 20,000 people, and the dome is made up of 3,000 tons of steel.
Similarly, Sphere Abu Dhabi will also be able to host up to 20,000 people and follow the same features and guidelines as its Las Vegas counterpart.
Las Vegas’ Sphere has been a controversial project. It is reported that the construction rose to $2 billion and that it was more than $1 billion over budget. The entertainment venue opened in September 2023, and hosted a 40-show residency from U2. Plus, director Darren Aronofsky’s documentary Earth opened at the venue.
Details of where the Sphere Abu Dhabi will be located are currently undisclosed; however, expect it to find a permanent address at a prime spot. Additionally, information on when this marvel is expected to go into development and open to the public is also still under wraps, but stay tuned with FACT for the latest updates.
