The seashell-shaped island will be home to a 1,000-seater theatre.

Is it a seashell? A theatre? Well, it’s all of those things and more. Sharjah Government Media Bureau has announced its next megaproject: Sharjah Floating Theater. The magnificent new theatre, which can accommodate 1,000 visitors, promises to be one of the emirate’s cultural highlights.

Sharjah Floating Theater is located in Kalba and boasts views of the Kalba Corniche and Arabian Gulf. In true UAE fashion, it has a unique shape. In this case, the island is shaped like a seashell and is surrounded by water basins. His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah not only approved the project, but came up with the idea of the seashell shape himself.

A series of projects in Sharjah have been announced, which range from the restoration of a historic home to the construction of a clocktower roundabout. Sharjah will also be home to new sights, which make the most of its glorious surroundings. The regeneration projects also aim to enhance the area for residents, and attract visitors from the UAE and abroad.

Other developments include Jabal Al Deem Rest House, which is located 850 meters above sea level. Al Hafiya Lake Project is a family-friendly spot in the mountains, which overlooks Kalba city. The project will include a restaurant, café, prayer room and children’s playground.

Sharjah is one of the UAE’s cultural hotspots, as UNESCO labelled it the Cultural Capital of the Arab World. The emirate is home to the House of Wisdom, which is designed by the British design firm Foster & Partners; and the Khorfakkan Amphitheatre, a 190,000 square foot Roman-style amphitheatre.

Build it, and we’ll come.
