For pizza, pasta and superb desserts, look no further than Il Pomodoro

Nestled in the bustling streets of Deira and located on the first floor of Days Hotel by Wyndham Dubai Deira sits the new Italian restaurant – Il Pomodoro. This recently opened modern restaurant is an excellent addition to Deira’s up-and-coming dining scene.  

Arriving for dinner on a Saturday, we exit the lift and smell all of the fantastic aromas we’d expect from a good Italian restaurant; baked pizza bases, fresh tomato sauce, slow-cooked Bolognese – you get our drift. We opt for a window seat, though we are more in awe of the interiors than the bright lights and kinetic movement on the bustling Deira streets. From our table, we have a great view of the restaurant, the open kitchen, the copper hardware, carefully placed photographic frames, and different lighting levels – all contributing to creating a welcoming space. It feels like a great way to end the weekend and our friendly waiter runs through the menu and various packages, filled with smiles and plenty of recommendations.

Our waiter makes room on our table for the generous portion of fresh arrabbiata pasta to start. We can taste the herbs and rich tomato sauce and we’re also advised to try the Calamarata in alfredo sauce and a penne Bolognese. We are so grateful for the recommendations and will most definitely return for these two dishes. 

Il Pomodoro surprises us with its variety of Italian flavours and impressive but straightforward menu. There is something hearty for everyone and the restaurant offers perfect weekend comfort food for the entire family. 

We then delve into the freshly-baked pizzas, a vegetarian and the signature pepperoni pizza. We try to leave some room for this, but in all honesty, we find it very hard to pause. Yes, the pasta dishes are that good! 

We can smell the vegetarian pizza before we see it. Filled with fresh vegetables and herbs, we enjoy every piping hot slice. We also feel highly informed about the dishes we have tried. However, our firm favourite remains penne bolognaise – a simple but spectacular dish that we’ll undoubtedly be heading across town for. 

We end the meal with an indulgent sweet delight in the form of the restaurant’s popular tiramisu. We thought we did not have room for dessert, but who comes to an Italian restaurant and does not order tiramisu?

Il Pomodoro is modern with accents of bold dark furniture and great lighting – it has a cosy and welcoming feel. It is an affordable option for catching up with friends, family lunches or a spot to enjoy a casual and delicious Italian bite. Buon appetito!
