The group show Returning to a Present takes place in AlJadida.
There are many reasons to visit Saudi Arabia’s AlUla, from a UNESCO World Heritage Site to world-class concerts. Now, there is one more, thanks to a new art exhibition. Jeddah’s ATHR Gallery is bringing Returning to a Present to AlUla’s AlJadida space, and here’s what to expect.
The group exhibition brings together Saudi Arabian artists. Pharah Al Galib has curated her first-ever exhibition, and the show includes the artists Sarah Abu Abdullah, Ahaad Alamoudi, Ayman Yossri Daydban, Sultan bin Fahad, Ibrahim Romman and Muhannad Shono. The artists explore the relationship between tradition and transformation in the Kingdom. Plus, the artwork covers a range of medium including installations, painting, photography and video.
The gallery is located in AlJadidah, which is in AlUla’s Old Town. The area prides itself on being a buzzing, creative hub. The site includes Insta-worthy murals, an impressive hand-painted carpet, and it hosts local as well as international artists. Plus, visitors can make a day out of it, as it is home to shops as well as restaurants.
In 2019, ATHR was founded in Jeddah by Mohammed Hafiz and Hamza Serafi. The name translates to greater in Arabic, and sums up the gallery’s mission. The gallery aims to represent a diverse range of artists. ATHR was the first contemporary art gallery to open in AlUla, and it also has the outpost ATHR JAX in Riyadh. In the future, the gallery plants to commission, curate and exhibition more experimental work.
Returning to a Present runs from 13 July to 30 September.
