Saudi Arabia’s oldest school is set to make history once again.

Imagine your old school turning into a museum — a place where your memories become part of history. That’s exactly what’s happening with Jeddah’s Al Falah School.

Al Falah School in Jeddah is Saudi Arabia’s oldest educational institution. Now, its historical section will be handed over to the Ministry of Culture to be transformed into a museum. This move preserves the school’s storied past and celebrates its role in shaping Saudi Arabian education.

Al Falah School is located in Bazan, within Jeddah’s historic Al Balad district. Its location is steeped in heritage and tradition, naturally making this institution one for the books. The school complex comprises two buildings, the older one dating back more than 120 years. This U-shaped structure, still in use today, retains much of its original architecture, including wooden floors, ceilings, doors, and a green dome.

The transformation focuses on the older building of Al Falah School, which will become a fully integrated museum. Plans include creating a cultural space, a heritage-themed cafe, and seating areas designed to offer an immersive historical experience. Visitors will be able to explore the story behind the school and its role in shaping modern education while also learning about Jeddah’s rich heritage.

This project aims to honour the school’s historical significance and preserve its heritage for future generations. Al Falah School represents the commencement of formal education in the Arabian Peninsula. It was established in 1905 by Sheikh Mohammed Ali Zainal Alireza during a period when the Hijaz region was under Ottoman rule and education opportunities were scarce. Supported by prominent business families, the school managed to survive through financial crises before the government stepped in to support it.

The transformation of Al Falah School into a museum symbolises Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving its cultural and historical heritage. As the Kingdom takes modernisation efforts under Vision 2030, projects like this highlight the balance between embracing the future and honouring the past. By repurposing historical landmarks, Saudi Arabia is not only preserving its roots but also creating cultural spaces that educate and inspire.
