This is your comprehensive guide to the Iqama and how you can get it.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on Saudi Arabia, you already know that the Kingdom is stepping up its game in every possible way — be it hospitality, food and beverage, entertainment or hosting global events. And with all this excitement, more and more people are considering a move to the Kingdom. But before you start packing your bags, you need to check off some legal requirements. Like any other country, Saudi Arabia requires expats to have proper documentation to live and work there. That’s where the Iqama comes in. Here’s everything you need to know about getting your Iqama in Saudi Arabia.

What’s an Iqama?

The Iqama is an official residency permit issued by the Saudi Arabian government’s Ministry of Interior, allowing expats to live and work in the Kingdom. Much like a UAE-issued Emirates ID, it’s your key to accessing services like healthcare, banking and education.

Getting an Iqama

The process of obtaining an Iqama is simple, but it requires multiple steps. Your employer is responsible for initiating the process, however, their company must be registered with the Ministry of Labor and Social Development in Saudi Arabia. Once that’s ensured, they will need to apply for your work visa, which must be approved by the Ministry of Investment. This takes around two weeks for approval.

Once this step is completed, the Saudi Embassy in your home country or wherever you’re located at the time of the process will issue the visa. This process requires your educational documents, a medical certificate and biometric data. After this is completed, you can make your way to Saudi Arabia.

After landing in the Kingdom, you must undergo a mandatory medical check at an approved centre to screen for infectious diseases. You must reshare your biometric data and visit the Jawazat (General Directorate of Passports) to ensure your photo and any remaining paperwork is tended to, including health insurance.

With all documents submitted and medical tests cleared, the Iqama is issued — sometimes on the same day. You can collect it yourself or have a Saudi national pick it up for you.

Validity of the Iqama

The Iqama is usually valid for one to two years. However, the physical card is issued for five years. But it must be renewed annually. And if your employer goes out of business, your Iqama becomes invalid. That means you’ll either need to find another sponsor or leave the country.

Benefits of an Iqama

The Iqama allows you to stay and work legally in Saudi Arabia. It helps you get access to health care and banking as well as obtain a SIM card. With the Iqama, you can sponsor your spouse and children as well to live with you in the Kingdom. Some Iqama holders may also be allowed visa-free travel to other GCC countries.

Cost of an Iqama

The cost of obtaining an Iqama is usually covered by the employer, including application and renewal fees. However, you should clarify fee obligations in your contract.

Moving to Saudi Arabia is an exciting prospect, and securing an Iqama is the first step. But before making the move, double-check the latest immigration regulations and consider consulting a professional to avoid any hiccups. With the Kingdom’s rapid growth and transformation, now is a great time to be part of its future.
