Plans to reintroduce Arabian oryx, cheetahs and leopards are afoot.

Saudi Arabia is in the process of positioning itself as the ultimate tourist destination. With world-class entertainment avenues on the horizon, the Kingdom is adamant about making headlines. But beyond all this excitement, Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainability is also taking the spotlight. And to elevate these efforts, plans to manage the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve have just been announced.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has unveiled the Integrated Development Management Plan (IDMP) for the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve. Covering over 20,00-square-km, this plan aligns with global standards across environmental, economic, social, and cultural aspects. This proves that the Kingdom is serious about improving life for more than just humans.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve spans 15 ecosystems, and IDMP aims to bring these back. Plans to reintroduce over 23 species that once called this land home are currently underway, including Arabian oryx, leopards, and cheetahs. Even species of flora and fauna, dating back over a century, will be reintroduced as part of this initiative.

The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve is not just about saving the environment. One major part of IDMP is to increase job opportunities in the Kingdom and this project will help the livelihoods of over 5,000 people — thus, improving the economy and diversifying the local talent pool.

Saudi Arabia also plans to develop a 70,000-square-km environmental corridor by 2025. Once completed, this will allow wildlife to roam freely across the Kingdom’s regions, such as AlUla, Amaala, and Neom — which means camels will not be the only animals you spot on your road trips.

With an aim to attract a record number of tourists, Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve might also start hosting safari experiences.
