MBS shares a vision with no cars, roads and carbon emissions.
Gigaprojects come and come in Saudi Arabia, but Neom stands out for being the most ambitious. The plans sound like something out of a sci-fi film, as there’ll be everything from flying taxis to a fake moon. The project is one futuristic step closer to being realised, as His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Chairman of the Neom Board of Directors, announced the designs of Neom’s The Line.
Neom’s The Line aims to redefine urban living. The Line is a 170km-long residential complex with zero cars, zero roads and zero carbon emissions. When completed, the area will be home to million residents across 34 square kilometres.
HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman explained: “At The Line’s launch last year, we committed to a civilisational revolution that puts humans first based on a radical change in urban planning. The designs revealed today for the city’s vertically layered communities will challenge the traditional flat, horizontal cities and create a model for nature preservation and enhanced human liveability. The Line will tackle the challenges facing humanity in urban life today and will shine a light on alternative ways to live.”
HRH added: “We cannot ignore the liveability and environmental crises facing our world’s cities, and Neom is at the forefront of delivering new and imaginative solutions to address these issues. Neom is leading a team of the brightest minds in architecture, engineering and construction to make the idea of building upwards a reality.”
HRH concluded: “Neom will be a place for all people from across the globe to make their mark on the world in creative and innovative ways. Neom remains one of the most important projects of Saudi Vision 2030, and our commitment to delivering The Line on behalf of the nation remains resolute.”
The Line aims to address problems related to urban design, and has attracted world-renowned architects and engineers. The Line will be so compact that you’ll be within a five-minute walk from facilities and a 20-minute high-speed rail will take you through the city. As the area will be 10 degrees Celsius colder than the rest of the GCC, it will be cool enough to walk all-year round.
Plus, it was recently revealed that it will be home to the world’s longest skyscraper: Mirror Line. The structure will be a record-breaking 121 kilometers long, and comprise of two buildings up to 490 metres tall. If Saudi builds it this ambitiously, they will come.
