The National Theatre is home to world-class productions. Now, you don’t have to travel to London to see a show, as National Theatre Live means that you can watch one across the world. So, if you’re a theatre fan, William Shakespeare’s Othello will be screened at the Courtyard Playhouse in Dubai on 16 and 17 June. National Theatre Live’s Othello is directed by Clint Dyer, and the cast includes Giles Terera, Rosy McEwan and Paul Hilton. The story follows Desdemona and Othello, and their love that crosses racial lines. Othello is a refugee of slavery, and has risen to a high rank. Iago is furious that he has been overlooked for a promotion and plots revenge.

National Theatre Live’s Othello was filmed on the Lyttleton stage. The show has received critical acclaim, especially for making the racial themes relevant to a modern audience. The story tackles big themes of love, jealousy and prejudice.

National Theatre Live launched in 2009. The first production that was aired was Phedre, which starred Helen Mirren. The show was screened across 70 cinemas in the UK. Other highlights included the award-winning shows Fleabag, One Man, Two Guvnors, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time War and War Horse.

National Theatre Live aims to make theatre accessible to a wider audience. Nicholas Hytner, the former director of the Royal National Theatre, explained: “I grew up in Manchester in the 60s. If I had been able to see Olivier’s National Theatre at my local cinema, I would have gone all of the time.
