Now open at The Lana Promenade, the modern Japanese restaurant features a menu from acclaimed chef Reif Othman.
In Japanese culture, dragonflies symbolise transformation and renewal, and this idea of metamorphosis is embedded into the new restaurant Dragonfly at The Lana Promenade. As Dubai’s culinary scene continues to evolve, this sophisticated spot introduces diners to modern Japanese cuisine with a touch of pan-Asian flair, all orchestrated by the acclaimed Chef Reif Othman.
Walking into the restaurant is akin to stepping into a contemporary art installation. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the space in natural light while soaring eight-meter-high wooden ceilings set the scene for dramatic decor. The centrepiece, a red dragonfly sculpture, hangs majestically overhead, symbolising transformation and new beginnings. Japanese accents like kokeshi dolls and vibrant floral arrangements add pops of colour, and a sleek red glass bar beckons those seeking pre-dinner cocktails.
Looking to linger? Head upstairs to the TONBO lounge, where resident and guest DJs create an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere high above the busy dining room. The name is fitting, considering Tonbo (dragonflies) were symbols of courage among Samurai warriors during the Edo period, and the cocktail menu is inspired by the Seven Values of the Samurai’s moral code. Enjoy more than 80 sake and shochu options, and one of the widest selections of Japanese whiskies in the region.
Chef Reif’s has crafted a menu that blends Japanese staples with exciting pan-Asian influences where dishes deviate from the expected. Dragonfly’s menu combines traditional Japanese flavours with innovative culinary techniques. While there is a heavy reliance on caviar, gold leaf and uni (welcome to Dubai), the offering also showcases high-quality ingredients such as seafood and wagyu.
We begin with the delicate Akami Tuna Carpaccio (AED 120), presented like a blossoming rose and drizzled in a zesty clementine ponzu, and follow it up with rich Wagyu Tartare (AED 220) with caviar, pitch black nori bread and a touch of truffle mayo. Another highlight is the signature Uni Hokkaido Scallop (AED 120) with avocado and yuzu miso. Served in the spiky sea urchin shell, it’s a refreshing yet moreish morsel.
Chef Reif’s menu surprises with dishes you may never have seen before. The avant-garde Otoro Crystal Toast (AED 130) presents a translucent ‘brick’ that resembles an ice cube or crystal, seductively draped with slithers of toro and topped with a generous dollop of caviar. The result is a textural marvel that elevates rather than distracts from the buttery flavour of the tuna belly. The Dragonfly Battera Zushi (AED 450) is an impressive platter of rice topped with otoro tartar, uni and caviar, with which you are encouraged to use the accompanying nori wrappers to craft and roll your own sushi.
Five main courses are offered, each a testament to Chef Reif’s culinary prowess. The Braised Wagyu Short Rib (AED 210) is prepared for eight hours and served with a superbly sweet ginger soy that covers the tender beef in an alluring lacquer, while togarashi cashew offers a textural crunch. For a lighter option, the beautifully buttery Black Cod (AED 245) is a perfect iteration of the ever-popular dish.
Dragonfly’s Salted Caramel Gelato (AED 225) is a tremendous treat. Served with honeycomb, matcha mochi, meringue, pecan nuts and red bean paste, this literal mountain of dairy is superb for sharing and a wow-worthy finish to a memorable meal.
Dragonfly is in good culinary company at The Lana Promenade. Despite being the first restaurant to open, it will be joined by fancy French restaurant FrouFrou and a branch of the upmarket Cantonese restaurant China Tang.
The food may not be traditional, but this modern twist on Japanese favourites impresses in a dining scene so over-saturated with Pan Asian cuisine—and that’s no easy feat. The knowledgeable and attentive staff adds an extra layer of luxury to the experience.
With its beguiling blend of modern Japanese cuisine, stunning ambience, blockbuster Burj Khalifa views, and sterling service, Dragonfly soars above the competition.
