A swimmingly good time at the underwater-inspired restaurant.
What’s in a name? That which we call sexy by any other name could be just as controversial. The restaurant Sexy Fish has a headline-grabbing title, which has turned heads across its markets, from the UK to the UAE. Now that the restaurant has opened in DIFC, we urge you to look beyond the adjective. The concept boasts a bold design, creativity and culinary excellence, and that should be the talking point.
Between its resident DJs, opulent interiors, artworks by Damien Hirst and a menu inspired by the seas of Asia, Sexy Fish has won rave reviews since its London debut in 2015. The trendy restaurant and bar currently operates three restaurants—in London, Manchester, Miami—and now Dubai.
The restaurant’s interior is a veritable explosion of glamour and eccentricity, blending bold aquatic themes with a fantastical, underwater vibe. Guests enter Sexy Fish Dubai through a dedicated lift in Innovation One and are met with a stunning rooftop reception backed by a coral reef wall and crowned by a glittering Damien Hirst octopus sculpture.
The main dining room is awash in rich jewel tones, shimmering metallic accents, and an array of bespoke artworks that make it feel like you’ve entered Poseidon’s layer. A striking school of glass fish suspended in mid-air undulates above diners, creating a sense of movement and energy that is echoed by video screens, an illuminated agate floor and pulsating pillars resembling octopus tentacles intricately wrapped in hand-blown Murano glass. Embroidered furnishings evoke a sense of oceanic wonder, complemented by Venetian hand-blown jellyfish table lamps.
But beneath the glittering surface lies a menu that firmly anchors the experience. Led by Global Chef Director Bjoern Weissgerber, Sexy Fish Dubai offers a seasonal selection of sushi, sashimi, tartare, and nigiri alongside meat and seafood grilled on the Robata.
For sushi enthusiasts, the Sashimi Selection (AED 182 for six pieces) is a visual feast of glistening bluefin tuna, salmon and yellowtail, artfully arranged and served with freshly grated wasabi. The quality of the fish is impeccable—each bite melts away, leaving a fresh sweetness that lingers. Elsewhere, the Duck and Watermelon Salad (AED 144) is a vibrant dish in which the crispy poultry contrasts beautifully with the refreshing sweetness of watermelon, pomegranate and a hint of spice, resulting in a harmonious blend of textures that feels refreshingly light.
The Crispy Eryngii Mushroom (AED 82) is a textural marvel, combining earthy mushroom notes with a light, crispy batter and a tantalising black truffle dip. Sexy Fish Dubai’s Tuna Belly (AED 121) is a sophisticated signature. Thinly sliced, the rich, buttery tuna belly is cured, offering a delicate yet intense flavour. Paired with the bold kick of Japanese mustard or wasabi, this dish beautifully balances umami with the freshness of the fish. However, we’d forgo the chunky crackers, which dull the flavours of an otherwise perfect plate.
The signature dishes borrow heavily from Zuma. The Caramelised Black Cod (AED 247) is roasted on the robata grill; its caramelised miso glaze offers a luscious, sweet contrast to the cod’s buttery texture. However, the Spicy Beef Tenderloin (AED 243) doesn’t quite hit, coming off as slightly tough and too sweet.
The dessert selection features Petit Fours (AED 58) shaped like shells and starfish interspersed throughout a stand resembling a piece of coral. Tempting choices include Raspberry Donuts with Matcha (AED 68) and a cool yet refreshing Coconut Semi Freddo (AED 62) that resembles its namesake drupe.
The service is as polished as the decor, with staff exuding a genuine passion for the brand. However, the cocktail menu, offering both alcohol and zero-alcohol beverages (with the same names), appears confusing for both customers and staff alike. A collection of rare Japanese whiskeys, vintage Champagnes, and a robust wine list provide an extension of the restaurant’s opulent ethos.
With a bathroom boudoir that would make Ursula the Sea Witch proud, this stunning outpost of the celebrated Sexy Fish brand delivers a dining experience anchored around dazzling decor and indulgent dishes. In a restaurant where caviar, truffle and uni can be added to elevate your meal and Chu Toro, Burrata, and Caviar Nigiris are the norm, it’s no wonder the hip and happening Sexy Fish has become a celeb favourite with the likes of Johnny Depp, Kate Moss and Kendall Jenner.
For an underwater adventure and a swimmingly good time, look no further. And, don’t let the name turn you off.
