As world leaders descend on Dubai, here’s how to see the sustainable show.
All eyes are on Dubai, as COP28 UAE – United Nations Climate Change Conference has come to the city. Running from 30 November to 12 December at Expo City Dubai, the annual global climate summit brings together world leaders and aims to create policies to tackle climate change.
The conference first started in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event has since been held across the world in Argentina, Japan and Switzerland. In 2015, The Paris Agreement was signed in France, and the goal was to keep the rise in mean global temperature to below 2°C and limit the increase to 1.5°C. Now, leaders will see if the agreement has been met and discuss how to create a sustainable future.
Guests at COP28
COP28 UAE will bring together more than 70,000 participants, which includes heads of state, governments, industry leaders, NGOs and academics. The President of COP28 is the UAE’s Sultan Al Jaber, and he is the country’s special envoy for climate change.
The notable guests include Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak; United States President, Joe Biden; President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jingping; and President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen. Start practising your curtsy, as King Charles III, King of the United Kingdom and Head of the Commonwealth, is a guest speaker. He will also speak on 1 December and is expected to share his vision for the future.
If you’re expecting to see environmental activist Greta Thunberg, think again. She was recently spotted at a pro-Palestinian protest in Stockholm, and has criticised COP28’s efforts regarding climate change. Plus, the Vatican’s Pope Francis was originally going to attend, but has since cancelled due to health concerns.
